Educational Testing Service (ETS): ETS is the company that produces and administers the SAT and other educational achievement tests

Electronic Funds Transfer: EFT is used by some schools and Stafford Loan lenders to wire funds for Stafford loans directly to participating schools without requiring an intermediate check for the student to endorse. The money is transferred electronically instead of using paper, and hence is available to the student sooner. Students are advised to use EF

Electronic Student Aid Report.: An Electronic Student Aid Report (ESAR) is an electronic form of the Student Aid Report

Eligible Non-Citizen: Someone who is not a US citizen but is nevertheless eligible for Federal student aid. Eligible non-citizens include US permanent residents who are holders of valid green cards, US nationals, holders of form I-94 who have been granted refugee or asylum status, and certain other non-citizens. Non-citizens who hold a student visa or an exchange visitor visa are not eligible for Federal student aid.

Eligible Program: A course of study that leads to a degree or certificate and meets the U.S. Department of Education's requirements for an eligible program.

Emancipated: Declaring a child to be legally emancipated is not sufficient to release the parents or legal guardians from being responsible for providing for the child's education. If this were the case, then every parent would "divorce" their children before sending them to college. The criteria for a child to be found independent are much stricter.

Enrollment Status: A student's enrollment status indicates whether the student attends school full- , half- , or part-time. Full-time refers to a minimum of 12 credit hours. Half time usually refers to at least six credit hours. In most cases, a student must be enrolled at least half-time to qualify for financial aid.

Exit Counseling (or Exit Interview): Prior to graduating withdrawing, or dropping below half-time enrollment, borrowers are required to complete exit counseling to  help prepare them for repayment. Exit counseling provides valuable information about borrower's rights and responsibilities, as well as helpful money-saving ideas

Expected Family Contribution: A preliminary estimate of a family's ability to cover the cost of attendance. The EFC is based on the data provided in a FAFSA and is subject to change based upon the school's verification of information provided. The EFC is used as a basis in determining eligibility for federal student aid. Many schools have their own methodology to determine EFC, in addition to the government's methodology. An EFC is provided on a Student Aid Report based on the information a student provides in a FAFSA.
